The Way We Learn
The government introduced a new curriculum in 2008 called the Early Years Foundation Stage. This curriculum covers children from birth to and including reception classes. The ethos of the curriculum is very child focused and places a huge emphasis on the practitioner to understand the way in which children learn.

The Early Year’s Foundation Stage focuses on 4 areas which supports all areas of the children’s development and personal growth. These are:
  •  1) A unique child
  •  2) Positive relationships
  •  3) Enabling environments
  •  4) Learning and development
The Early Years Foundation Stage:
The foundation for all activities and opportunities is available to children both indoors and outdoors.

We have recognised the need for stimulating outdoor areas to support children learning and we have designed the outdoors areas to ensure there are various areas which enable all groups of children to access the outdoors and introduced a variety of outdoor resources and equipment to promote all areas of children’s learning and development.

It is from these principles listed that early year’s practitioners at My First Friends Nursery, Rubery and pre-school use to plan, create, implement and provide appropriate opportunities for children’s development and personal growth in both indoor and out door environments.

  •  Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable,
confident and self assured
  •  Children learn to be strong and independent from a loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person
  •  The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning
  •  Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected
Our aim is to ensure that every individual child’s needs are met, and they are encouraged to develop in their own time at their own pace.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is reflected in the activities and opportunities on offer to the children in the outdoors area throughout the day.

We encourage and provide outside areas for the older children to experience planting flowers and vegetables and just generally getting messy digging in the mud this is loved by all.

The outdoor areas provide many natural materials and resources for children to extend their learning for example communication, Language and literacy can be promoted in the garden with the use of a few little twigs or sticks and a small patch of mud as the children can be encouraged to make marks and patterns.

Or by using pots of water and paint brushes to make pictures. By providing these opportunities to the children we are ensuring we meet and support all the children’s differing learning styles.
Keeping You Updated
Progress checks and profiles when your child is 2. Our team will give you a written summary of how your child is progressing against the 3 prime areas of learning.
  •  Communication and language
  •  Physical Development
  •  Personal, social and emotional development.
This is called the progress check at age 2 It highlights areas where your child is progressing well and anywhere they might need some extra help or support.
Transition To School
It’s a huge progression moving from nursery to school and we want to ensure that this is as hassle free as possible for you and your child.

We work closely with the local schools and the extended community throughout your child’s time with us to ensure we make that transition as smooth as possible when the time comes.

Please feel free to ask a member of staff for a copy of our Transition to School policy.
